directeur HKU Muziek & Technologie

From 1 July I will start my new position as director of HKU Music & Technology (M&T). M&T is an art college with approximately 400 students, about 50 lecturers and a large network of alumni and guest lecturers, and is part of HKU (Utrecht School of the Arts).

For many years I have been involved in this school: I started as a student in the late 1980s, soon after that as a teacher, and in recent years I was vice director and course leader of the Master of Music-Music Design. Until now no more than two days a week, but as director I will be working more or less full-time within Music & Technology. It is a well-considered choice to reverse the balance between my own professional practice and the school, this will undoubtedly bring all kinds of new interesting challenges on my path.

To give an impression of the dynamics of HKU Music & Technology: alumni are active in divergent contexts, ranging from Tarik Barri with Thom Yorke / Atoms for Peace, to Torre Florim from De Staat, to Sick Individuals with Hardwell. M&T hosted the international ICMC conference in 2016, and actively participated in the research and development of international policy in the field of loudness normalization (started with the EBU R128 broadcast standard, currently with streaming via Tidal and Spotify). Many companies, internationally active, are spin-off from M&T, and regularly started as project groups that have continued after the study. Examples: Big Orange, AudioEase (makers of Altiverb), Yipp, Project SAM.
